Tarifa is legendary for its winds. The Levante (an easterly wind from the land) and the Poniente (a westerly breeze from the Atlantic) shape the rhythm of life here—each offering unique conditions that make Tarifa a true paradise for kitesurfers. Which one will you ride with?
With more than 300 windy days a year, a variety of sea conditions, and two distinct wind personalities, Tarifa is one of the best places on earth to learn, progress, and push your limits. The conditions can be demanding, but that’s exactly why they’re so special—training here makes you a complete kitesurfer, ready to ride safely and confidently anywhere in the world.
LEVANTE: Side-offshore wind, strong and gusty, flat water
- Characteristics: The Levante is a warm easterly wind that blows from the land, making it strong and often gusty, typically between 18 and 35 knots. It can take a few days to stabilize, but it brings beautiful turquoise, usually flat water, with occasional waves between 50 cm and 2 m on windier days.
- Kitesurfing Practice: Though it may take some time to handle its gusts and lulls, the Levante offers excellent flat water for beginners practicing waterstarts, intermediates refining technique, and advanced riders working on freestyle. When waves appear, they’re perfect for big air jumps or strapless wave riding. Since it’s a side-offshore wind, always use the local rescue boat service—rescue vouchers and schedules are available with us.
- Recommended Spots: Best spots for Levante are Los Lances Norte (Rio Jara, Agua) and Valdevaqueros. Balneario is suitable only for very experienced riders. If the wind gets too strong, consider nearby fallback spots like Palmones, Getares (Algeciras), or Los Caños de Meca.
PONIENTE: Side-on wind, light and stable, wavy or choppy
- Characteristics: The Poniente is a westerly wind from the Atlantic—cool, lighter, and more stable than the Levante—blowing between 12 and 25 knots. While it brings more irregular waves and choppy conditions on strong wind days, it can benefit from a thermal boost on hot, sunny afternoons, turning light forecasts into perfect kiting conditions.
- Kitesurfing Practice: The Poniente offers steady, reliable wind, making it ideal for beginners to practice kite control and progress with confidence. During the summer season, the sea is usually calm, creating easy conditions for learning. In winter, occasional swells appear, giving intermediate and advanced kiters the chance to enjoy fun wave riding and great lift for jumps with longer hangtime.
- Recommended Spots: Out of season, you can kite along the entire Los Lances beach. From June to September, kiting is restricted to Los Lances Norte (Rio Jara, Agua, Arte Vida). Valdevaqueros is another good option, except when the wind turns northerly.

- Power House (N-340, km 82): Just five minutes from town, this hidden roadside spot is a go-to for kitesurfers fueling up pre-session. Arrive before 1 p.m. to beat the rush and enjoy hearty sweet or savory breakfast options.
- Bonjour (C. Colón, 8): Located in the old town, Bonjour is a cozy vegan café serving energizing, flavorful breakfasts—perfect for a healthy start to your day in Tarifa.
